Conversion of an integral garage

Converting an integral garage to another room to be used in connection with the existing house such as a living room or bedroom will not require planning permission provided:

  • There is no condition attached to the original planning permission for the house that prevents such a conversion (houses built in recent decades are often subject to such a condition: your council will have details); and
  • the materials used for any exterior work such as a wall built in place of the garage door are similar in appearance to those used on the existing dwelling.
