Village green status

Village green legislation is separate to planning legislation. If land has been used for public recreation for over 20 years, it might be possible for it to be designated as a village green and this would prevent its development. Village green status cannot be sought if proposals are put forward for the development of the land, e.g. if a planning application is submitted for its development or if the site is proposed for development in a Local Plan.

For further information on how to obtain village green status please refer to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs website.
