Where can I get advice and how to find a qualified planning consultant?

All of the questions described in ‘Key questions to ask about a potential site’ will help give you an idea on whether a site is likely to get permission before getting professional advice from a planning consultant or solicitor. Even if you are advised against buying a site, seeking professional advice is a worthwhile thing to do as it will most likely save time and money later on down the line.

The RTPI Directory of Planning Consultants is a searchable database that can help you find a professional planning consultant in your local area.

When looking to employ a planning consultant, it is worth checking whether they are ‘Chartered’.  Chartered Planners are members of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and must adhere to the Institute’s Code of Professional Conduct which sets out the standards, ethics and professional behaviour expected of its members.

A planner does not have to be Chartered to practice, but chartership is a helpful indication of their professional knowledge and expertise.

A Chartered planner will use the designation MRTPI after their name.

If in doubt, you can check whether a planner is chartered by contacting the RTPI.

You can also contact Friends, Families and Travellers who offer general advice and support to Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.
