Who we are

Planning Aid England (PAE) is part of the Royal Town PIanning Institute (RTPI). Our work is built on the principle that everyone should have access to the planning system.

PAE has been helping individuals and communities engage with the planning system for over fifty years and our services are guided by the following principles:

Being clear and knowledgeable
We aim to explain what is and what isn’t possible in relation to planning.

Being volunteer-led
Our work is delivered by dedicated volunteers who are supported by a small staff team. All our volunteers are members of the RTPI and have a range of skills, interests and expertise.

Being independent
PAE is funded by the RTPI, a registered charity. It is separate from both central and local government and provides completely independent and impartial professional planning advice.

Being impartial
Our staff and volunteers provide objective planning advice and guidance. We do not act as agents or advocate for particular planning outcomes. Our role is to explain not to influence.

Planning Aid England enjoys coverage throughout England. Planning Aid for Scotland, Planning Aid Wales and Planning Aid for London exist as separate charities delivering services in Scotland, Wales and the capital respectively.  In Northern Ireland the not-for-profit organisation Community Places provides free planning advice.
