This is a designation specific to London. It is intended to protect open areas that contribute to the structure of the city, provide open air facilities for sport/recreation, contain features of historic or biodiversity value and/or form part of the green infrastructure network. Metropolitan Open Land essentially has the same status as green belt, in that it is protected from 'inappropriate' development. Any alterations to the boundary of MOL are undertaken by the individual London Boroughs as part of the Local Plan process, in consultation with the Mayor and adjoining boroughs.
